Japanese scientist from Kashiwa are working together with origami masters with the hope to launch an airplane made of paper from space and explore its journey back to Earth.

The first prototype passed the durability test in a wind tunnel this month which resulted in the adoption of the project by the Japan’s Space Agency for further testing.

“One successful flight from space to Earth by an origami plane could have huge impact on the development of re-entry vehicles and space probes for upper-atmospheric studies” , said the leader of the project Pr. Shinji Suzuki of the Tokyo University’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

In early February a prototype about 5 cm long and 4 cm wide had managed to survive Mach 7 speed and astonishing temperatures up to 466 degrees Fahrenheit in a hypersonic wind tunnel.
